Inovalon Database

About Inovalon Database

A cross-institutional consortium of Harvard faculty purchased a large, commercial health insurance claims database licensed by Inovalon Insights to establish a data repository for their research. Management of the repository is a collaborative effort between the Center for Computational Biomedicine (CCB), the Office of Research Administration (ORA), and HMS IT Research Computing (RC). CCB provides data engineering and management, RC manages the IT infrastructure, and ORA Research Data Compliance (ORA-RDC) provides compliance support to users and verifies project-level compliance.

Eligibility

Faculty who contributed to the initial data purchase are eligible to request access to the data for themselves or study team members conducting research under their supervision/ sponsorship.  Participating schools at this time include Harvard Medical School, Harvard Chan School of Public Health, Harvard Business School, Harvard Kennedy School, and Harvard Law School.

Accessing the Data

The Inovalon Data Access Hub– available to eligible data users– includes details of the database, resources for accessing the data, and guidance on completing data compliance requirements.

  • Data Compliance Information: outlines permitted use of the data
  • Data Access Prerequisites: eligible users must have IRB approval, IT security Approval, and submit a Signed User Agreement prior to requesting access to the database
  • General Information and FAQs: an overview of the database, details on what is included with access to the database (e.g., number of seats per faculty member), and frequently asked questions
