This workshop focuses on a critical part of every microscope: the detector. Understanding the detector is crucial to understanding microscopy data, especially if you are making measurements on that data. We will cover theoretical principles behind digital images and the devices we use to generate them, including:

• how digital cameras detect and measure light
• the differences between sCMOS, CCD & EMCCD cameras
• digital image quality, including signal-to-noise ratio and pixel size
• camera acquisition settings
• digital image processing and display
• practical advice on displaying images effectively in figures and presentations
