Data Management
Course Objective
The new NIH Policy strongly encourages the use of established repositories to the extent possible for preserving and sharing scientific data. In this workshop we will review a variety of institutional, generalist, and discipline specific data repositories you can use to share your research data according to best practices. Participants will gain an understanding of the diverse landscape of repository options and which features may be relevant for their discipline, data type, or funder requirements.

Research involves increasingly complex arrangements for the storage and transmission of research data. Data privacy and security planning is necessary to protect research subjects and to safeguard sensitive, personally identifiable information.
During this short training seminar, we will discuss how to properly store and access your data, protect your data from unauthorized access or data loss, and incorporate storage management into your research workflows.

Data management responsibilities extend beyond just the PI or researcher who created or collected the data. Various parties are involved in the research process and may play a role in ensuring good quality data stewardship. It is essential that the roles and responsibilities of data management are clearly defined and assigned, rather than assumed.
During this short training seminar, we will discuss what role you can play in your lab regarding data management and how that role can assist with compliance under the NIH’s new Data Management and Sharing Policy.

Join this panel as they address:
- Diverse sources of bias, and how current experimental design, data management, and statistical practices attenuate their potential to confound research
- Ethical considerations when researchers make choices about the acquisition, use, analysis, and interpretation of data
- How different data management and data sharing practices can support or undermine the quality of research
We suggest reading “The 7 deadly sins of research” prior to attending.
