Job Summary

The Center for Computational Biomedicine (CCB) is a newly established center within the Harvard Medical School. The CCB mission is to leverage data and computation to transform research and improve health.  Areas of application include imaging, genetics, genomics, clinical data, claims and other data sources.

Recent advances in imaging technology have greatly increased achievable spatial and temporal resolution, resulting in large scale data sets with many opportunities for advanced analytics and machine learning to help streamline the process and decrease the analysis time. Analyzing and interpreting these data present substantial methodological challenges including efficient storage and access, computing, segmentation, identification of particular cellular structures, single molecules etc.

With regards to imaging, the CCBs goal is to collaborate with HMS faculty to develop new analysis platforms that enable quantitative, reproducible and readily shareable research. The successful candidate will collaborate with HMS biomedical research labs to identify leading-edge unmet image analysis needs and develop novel computer vision approaches to meet those needs by hiring and managing a team of computer vision researchers.  The Director will be proposed for appointment to the Research Scientist pathway through the Department of Biomedical Informatics, Harvard Medical School.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead major projects in various areas of biomedical research, such as digital pathology, neuronal imaging, single molecule imaging (eg. MERFISH), live cell imaging and animal behavior
  • Recruit and manage a team of scientists who will collaborate with different groups within the HMS ecosystem to develop novel computer vision approaches to biomedicine and help develop large well annotated data resources suitable for a variety of research and pedagogical purposes.
  • Work closely with the Director of Biomedical Computer Vision, the Director of SBGrid and other imaging core directors to integrate recent computer vision research advances with teaching and service, and to identify areas of high priority in terms of unmet need and to address computational challenges.

Basic Qualifications

  • Ph.D. and 5+ years of postdoctoral experience in a quantitative field, with extensive bioimage analysis experience
  • Familiarity with modern bioimaging technology and methodology
  • A strong track record of producing computational solutions to complex data analytic and computational problems
  • The ability to manage teams and projects in a dynamic academic environment
  • The ability to engage on a wide variety of problems and provide both high level consulting advice on design as a well as detailed computational suggestions
  • A good understanding of how best to operationalize image processing and ML/AI on large complex images (including live animal video capture)
  • Strong interdisciplinary communication skills
